Chanel was introduced to the world in 1913 when, then-30-year-old, Gabrielle Coco Chanel opened the doors to her first namesake boutique. Coco’s reimagining of women’s fashion propelled the brand to become the pillar of French Couture it is today.
Karl Lagerfeld took the helm as creative director in 1983, a little over a decade after Coco’s death. Lagerfeld’s Chanel embraced the house’s origins, while amplifying accessories and embracing celebrity muses.
The early days of Chanel were marked by Coco’s focus on comfort and menswear-inspired tailoring, a stark contrast to the feminine and restrictive styles women were seen wearing at the time.
Chanel quickly became known for their jersey dresses, tailored skirt sets and what is now known as a wardrobe staple, the LBD.
Part of Coco’s genius was her ability to set new precedents for French couturiers. In 1921, though unheard of at the time, Chanel launched their first fragrance, Chanel No. 5. This not only contributed to the house’s success but, influenced the luxury beauty industry known today.
Coco always had the “modern women” top of mind, designing her iconic quilted “2.55” bag with a shoulder strap, allowing hands-free carry. Her two-toned shoes followed shortly after, thoughtfully designed to give the appearance of a shortened foot, while elongating a woman’s legs.
When Karl Lagerfeld took charge in the early ‘80s, he brought about a grandeur to the sophisticated Parisian brand. Every collection during his tenure was defined by modern accessorizing and production-like shows.
In 2013, he showed an Americana-inspired collection in Texas, where even denim-clad models were undeniably Chanel. The following year, models strolled a Chanel supermarket in trainers and layers of pearls, setting the trend of chic athleisure.
Lagerfeld’s ability to seamlessly merge Chanel with entertainment and culture allowed for unique partnerships with his many muses, including supermodel Linda Evangelista, actresses Kiera Knightley and Kristen Stewart and artist/musician Pharrell Williams.
Chanel’s innate ability to understand the needs of the modern woman has allowed the brand to hold its prominence in fashion for over a century.
In February 2019, Lagerfeld died in Paris. His last collection was shown on March 5th as a tribute to his long-lasting influence as creative director. His protégée, Virginie Viard, took over the prestigious position, ushering in a new era for the house.
